The United States Copyright Act protects original works of authorship from being copied without the author's permission. Copyright law it has become a cornerstone to many business industries due to the importance of preventing copyright infringers from exploiting an author's work. However, due to the complex nature of the Copyright Act, much litigation has taken place surrounding the questions of what works can be protected, who does it protect, and what conduct constitutes infringement.

Copyright law in the United States has changed a lot over the past couple centuries. However, the majority of that change has occurred over the past 30+ years due to the vast amounts of new media that is covered under the current Copyright Act. The new Copyright Act has broken up copyrightable material into eight (8) different categories:

  • - Literary works (also including software programs)
  • - Musical works, including accompanying words
  • - Dramatic works, including accompanying music
  • - Pantomimes and choreographic works
  • - Pictoral, graphic, and sculptural works
  • - Motion pictures and other audiovisual works
  • - Sound recordings
  • - Architectural works

If you or your business are active in any of these categories than it is imperative that you protect your work to the full extent allowed by law through registration with the Copyright Office. Attorney Brian Boyer can help you get through the registration process with no problem.
